ATEX Pump Applications
New guidelines on explosion protection have been stipulated in order to unify European standards. The guidelines have become established under the name ATEX (Atmosphères Explosible). Directive 94/9/EC defines minimum requirements for explosion-protected devices and for the first time also includes non-electrical devices into explosion protection.

The supplementary Directive 1999/92/EC regulates the protective measures for employees working in potentially explosive atmospheres and defines the use of the device category in the different hazard zones. The zones result from the probability of a potentially explosive atmosphere developing.

Seepex reacted with a number of measures designed to satisfy the requirements of Directive 94/9/EC. Depending on the conditions of use and the respective device group, zone and temperature class, a pump optimised for the customer is implemented. Seepex is in a position to supply pumps from all type series in the ATEX version. In general, device groups IIG and IID with the zones 1, 21, 2 and 22 and the temperature classes T3 and T4 are offered. Other versions are tested if required. A variation for device group I is obtainable for the type series BN.

Biodiesel Pump Applications
Biodiesel, a fuel with similar characteristics like diesel usually made from vegetable oils or animal fats.

All vegetable oil molecules have a similar construction – fatty acid esters comprising the trivalent polyol glycerine. Biodiesel is produced by a Transesterification Process.

Vegetable oil and methanol are heated in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, alcoholate). This causes the glycerine and methanol to change places and three single fatty acid methyl ester chains and one glycerine molecule are formed. Subsequently, among others the developing glycerin is separated from the biodiesel in different cleaning steps.

The production of Biodiesel Fuels in the reactor is a simple, economical but also very controlled process. Pumping fluids of varying viscosity and gel characteristics requires the superior metering and low shear capabilities of a Progressive Cavity Pump.

Coal Bed Methane (CBM) Applications
Coal Bed Methane is extracted by pumping out large volumes of water from the Coal Seam. The reduction in water pressure releases the gas.

The produced water has high salinity and requires careful handling, processing and disposal. Pumping the water out of the ground requires specially designed Downhole Pumping Systems. Surface transfer pumps are needed to transport the water from the well site to holding tanks or processing facilities. Injection pumps are utilized to dispose the water by re-injecting it into the ground. The Total Water Management concept requires pumping solutions from extracting the water to its ultimate disposal in a manner that preserves the environment.

Coating Kitchen Applications
The varying demands placed on paper and cardboard by the further processing industry and end users frequently require the coating and laminating of raw paper. The coating of paper in the coating kitchen is a key procedure.

During the coating and laminating process, the surface of the raw paper is coated with pigments (coating color).

The coating kitchen is the main application for seepex progressive cavity pumps. This applies to the coating preparation as well as the feeding of coater in the coating system.

The coater is located inside or outside the paper machine. Its task consists of placing the coating color onto the raw paper. This is carried out via a jet coater or a coating sump. Environmental Technology Applications



Environmental protection and safeguarding healthy living space is the most important topic of our time worldwide. In the meantime the waste water treatment industry has developed into one of the most important areas with complex mechanical, biological and chemical processes. In this respect seepex progressive cavity pumps and macerators are used in almost all processes.

The sewage is fed into a waste water treatment plant for cleaning. After the cleaning process the treated water is fed back into the ecological cycle. Following the dewatering of the treated sludge, it is disposed of in landfills or further recycled in drying systems, incineration ovens or in agriculture. Flue Gas Desulfurization Applications
Flue gas desulfurization is a procedure for cleaning waste gas that occurs during the incineration of sulphurous fuels.

Different cleaning procedures are used to absorb the sulphur compounds. In this respect calcium washing as a wet procedure has asserted itself worldwide due to the high separation efficiency and the cost-effective and constantly available absorbents. Metering Solutions for Chemical Additives
Various organic and inorganic process additives are used in sewage treatment plants to support biological and mechanical processes. This area of application requires precise metering and the ability for a pump to handle difficult chemical products – an ideal application for a seepex pump.

Organic process additives, like anionic and cationic polyelectrolites, synthetic polymers or copolymers flocculants based on acrylamide, are metered into the sewage sludge to aid in the separation process. Inorganic process additives such as aluminum, calcium and iron salts (precipitants/flocculants) are used for chemical phosphate precipitation and sludge conditioning before mechanical dewatering. Multiphase Pumping Applications
The extremely high costs of installing and operating separation equipment at each well site and transferring it through multiple pipelines makes multiphase pumping a cost effective and efficient alternative.

Progressive cavity multiphase pumps routinely handle 99% gas fractions whereas the twin-screw pumps require complex auxiliary equipment above 95% gas fraction. They also have the added advantage of handling very high gas fractions as compared to other types of pumps. It handles slugs with ease and does not emulsify or degrade the liquid and gaseous phases during transportation.

The successful operation of this system requires a design modification of the internal rotating components, the use of advanced materials, and an adjustment to the interference between the rotor and stator. Paper Machine Applications
The manufacture of endless paper is a complex and technically demanding process. The machines used in the manufacturing process are, irrespective of the entire constructive variety, largely made up of the same elements: headbox; wire section, press and dryer section, size press. The fibrous materials are mixed in the stock preparation area prior to the headbox and enriched with auxiliary aids such as glue, kaoline and colorants. seepex progressive cavity pumps are ideally suited for this thanks to their characteristics. The conveying is gentle and by way of low pulsation, the metering of auxiliary aids is exact and the speed and the flow rate can be controlled.

In the paper machine the headbox distributes the fibre mixture uniformly via the width of the machine. The fibres settle in the subsequent wire section, a constantly circulating wire, while water is sucked downwards. The dehydration takes place in the press section by way of pressure of mechanical roller pairs. In the following drier section a damp-heated drying cylinder is then used to further remove water from the paper, while a relative residual dampness remains. Normally the paper web is impacted in this section by using additional surface hardener via a size press with a glue or starch solution. seepex progressive cavity pumps are also used to convey this solution because nothing is left to chance in this process either.

A part of the paper machines contains a machine calender at the end of the compacting and smoothing of the paper web. The finished paper web is wound up on a steel shaft where it remains up until finishing or possible coating and laminating which is the main area of application of progressive cavity pumps in the paper industry.

Dewatered Sludge Treatment
Introducing additives into dewatered sludge can improve its physical and chemical properties. Requirements differ depending on the disposal site, so treatment systems should be able to adapt to various methods of disposal. Dewatered sludges treated in seepex systems are more adaptable because of the consistent nature of both the dry solids content and their shear resistance.

For agricultural use, dewatered sludge is normally treated with quick lime. Because of the exothermal reaction of quick lime with water, moisture content is reduced and sludge structure enhanced. Paper production is a combination of very complex processes. Fibers from recycled paper, wood, and cellulose must be treated mechanically and chemically before they are sent to the stock preparation area. Paper basically consists of fibers, additives and water. Based on the type of fibrous material used, paper is generally sub-divided into three different groups: cellulose fiber, groundwood, and the secondary fiber group.
